Introduction
If you haven’t already noticed, we are experiencing the beginning of an economic crisis here in the United States. In their book, The Coming Generational Storm, authors Kotlikoff and Burns state that by the year 2030 the “U.S. will have a collective population older than in Florida today; walkers will outnumber strollers; and there will be twice as many retirees, but only 15% more workers to support them.” They go on to say that there will be “large numbers of impoverished elderly citizens languishing in understaffed, overcrowded, substandard nursing homes.” The government will be dramatically affected by the change in the age of our population. Kotlikoff and Burns continue by saying that in 2030 we will have a “government in desperate trouble – raising taxes sky high (69%), drastically cutting retirement and health benefits, slashing defense and education spending, borrowing far beyond its capacity to repay, and printing tons of money to meet its growing needs.”
How about a description of our economy: “Major tax evasion, high and rising inflation, growing underground economy, a rapidly depreciating currency, political instability, high unemployment, labor strikes, rising crime rates, record-high interest rates, financial markets in ruin, more people exiting the country than entering, and America plunging headlong toward third world status.”
Wow! That’s a pretty bleak report. What can save us from that? Well first off, we don’t want to be reliant on an employer for our financial future. Second, we can’t depend on the typical retirement programs to take care of us in our golden years. We need to take control of our financial future and there is only one way to do that – own and operate your own business.
Yes, we’re heading toward a breakdown of our economic system. The signs are all around us – increased number of bankruptcies, pay-day loan businesses popping up in every shopping center, mortgage companies offering the opportunity to lump credit card debt in with long-term mortgages, more lenient credit criteria for loans of every type, offers of no payments for a year or more, spending up and savings down, and average consumer debt per household rapidly rising, are just a few of the signs.
What does this mean for the future? It’s hard to predict exactly what will happen, however Kotlikoff and Burns gave us a highly educated forecast. Clearly this house of cards will eventually tumble and devastate most people. Who will survive? Historically it has been the entrepreneurs and particularly those who have businesses that generate residual income who do the best in difficult financial times. It is my belief that every household should have at least one business and particularly one home-based business. In the present times, this will increase the household income and reduce the overall taxes paid. It will also provide a solid opportunity to secure the financial future.
The balance of this book will give you detailed insight into why you should own a business, the best type of business to start, how to select the right business, and some success secrets. Please read this book carefully and then do what it says. The future will reveal a two class society – the upper class will be those who own businesses and the lower class will be those who work for someone else.
